VIENTIANE, September 17, 2026 — Travellers applying for a Lao e-Visa are now benefiting from a significantly longer period to use their authorisation, with approval notifications indicating a temporary extension of validity from the usual 60 days to 180 days from the date of approval.

The measure has been observed in notifications accompanying approved e-Visas since April 2026 and remains in effect as of September 2026, according to recent approvals reviewed by travel documentation experts.

The extension applies only to the period during which a traveller can use their approval letter to enter Laos. It does not change the permitted length of stay, which remains 30 days from the date of entry.

In practical terms, a traveller whose approval letter benefits from the 180-day validity has up to six months to choose their entry date, compared to two months under the usual system.

Official Notification Language

Approval notifications sent to travellers explicitly address the change. After noting that the standard validity period is 60 days, the notifications state that "given the current travel conditions affecting certain regions" , the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has implemented a temporary measure extending validity to 180 days.

The notifications also caution that the provision remains temporary and "may be reviewed and modified without prior notice" , in accordance with decisions of the competent authorities. No end date has been announced.

Official Portal Still Shows 60 Days

One important inconsistency remains. The official Lao eVisa portal continues to state in its FAQ section that "An eVisa is valid for a maximum of 60 days after receiving the Approval Letter" .

This means travellers consulting only the official website will see a 60-day validity period, while the notification accompanying their own approved e-Visa may announce 180 days. The date printed on the issued e-Visa approval letter is the determining factor.

What Travellers Should Check

To avoid confusion, three distinct pieces of information should be verified:

  1. The date of e-Visa approval

  2. The entry deadline shown on the approval letter

  3. The authorised length of stay — still 30 days from the date of entry

The temporary 180-day validity offers greater flexibility for travellers whose plans change or who need to reschedule. However, it does not permit a 180-day stay in Laos, nor does it allow multiple entries on the same e-Visa.

LDIF Requirement Remains Separate

Regardless of e-Visa validity, all foreign nationals must complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) within three days before arrival and three days before departure . The LDIF is a separate requirement from the visa and replaces the traditional paper arrival and departure cards at designated checkpoints .
