Phased Rollout: From Pilot to Full Launch
Phase 1 (October 2025) – Pilot Program
The ETA pilot was first introduced in October 2025 during South Africa's G20 Presidency. The initial phase targeted G20 delegates from China, India, Indonesia, and Mexico – the four G20 members requiring visas. During this phase, charges were waived as the platform's online payment function was not yet integrated.
Phase 2 (August 2026) – Full Launch
Following the successful pilot, the ETA will now officially launch on August 12, 2026 for all eligible nationals travelling for business or tourism. The system has since expanded to OR Tambo, Cape Town International, Lanseria International, and King Shaka International Airports.
The broader programme aims to extend the ETA to travellers from all countries that require a visa to enter South Africa, as well as across the country's busiest land ports of entry.
Proposed ETA Processing Fee
The Department of Home Affairs has published draft regulations proposing a R500 (approximately US$30) processing fee for ETA applications filed and processed online.
