Accra, April 4, 2026 — In a landmark decision that strengthens regional integration and promotes free movement across the continent, the Ghanaian government has announced the expansion of visa-free entry to all African passport holders.
Effective immediately, citizens of every African Union member state can now enter Ghana without a visa for stays of up to 90 days. This bold policy removes previous restrictions and places Ghana among the most open countries in Africa for intra-continental travel.
Key Highlights of the New Policy
Full visa-free access for citizens of all 55 African Union member states.
Stay duration: Up to 90 days per visit (with possibility of extension in certain cases).
Purpose of visit: Tourism, business, family visits, short-term study, and medical treatment.
No reciprocity required: Ghana is extending the benefit regardless of whether other African countries offer the same to Ghanaians.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, who described the move as “a concrete step toward realising the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the vision of an integrated, prosperous Africa.”
Why Ghana Is Taking This Step
Ghana has long positioned itself as a leader in Pan-Africanism. The country already offered visa-free entry or visa-on-arrival to many African nations, but today’s decision removes the remaining barriers for the entire continent.
Government officials highlighted several expected benefits:
Boost to tourism and hospitality sector
Increased intra-African trade and business travel
Stronger people-to-people connections
Enhanced Ghana’s image as a welcoming hub for African professionals, investors, and students
Support for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose secretariat is based in Accra
Who Benefits Most?
Business travellers and entrepreneurs looking to explore opportunities in Ghana’s growing economy
Tourists and diaspora visitors wanting easier access to Ghana’s rich cultural heritage
Students and researchers
Medical tourists
Families visiting relatives
Citizens from countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and many others will now enjoy seamless entry without the previous visa application process.
Important Notes for Travellers
A valid passport with at least 6 months validity is still required.
Travellers must demonstrate sufficient funds and a return/onward ticket.
The 90-day limit applies per visit; overstaying can result in fines or future entry bans.
Work, long-term study, or residence still requires the appropriate permit or visa.
A Growing Trend Across Africa
Ghana joins a small but expanding group of African nations that have removed visa barriers for fellow Africans, including Rwanda, Kenya, Seychelles, and Benin. The move is expected to encourage other countries to follow suit and accelerate the African Union’s goal of a visa-free continent.
