Kazakhstan Sets July 2027 Deadline for Mandatory QazETA Travel Authorization
Updated: 21 minutes ago
ASTANA, October 14, 2026 — Kazakhstan has completed the schedule for implementing its QazETA electronic travel authorization, with July 1, 2027, established as the start date for visa-exempt travelers to require this permit to enter the country.
The timeline is contained in Government Decree No. 890, signed on October 10, 2026, which amends the 2012 rules governing entry, stay and exit of foreign nationals. The decree takes effect on October 24, 2026. Further details on Kazakhstan's entry and residence framework are published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A Four-Stage Rollout
Rather than switching the system on overnight, Kazakhstan will phase in QazETA checks across border crossings over eight months. The key dates:
Date | What Happens |
November 1, 2026 | Checks begin at Aktau International Airport and four road crossings: Urlyutobe (Pavlodar), Aukhatty (Zhambyl), Atameken (Turkistan) and Nurly Zhol (Zhetisu) |
January 1, 2027 | Expansion to Astana and Almaty international airports |
March 1, 2027 | Remaining border crossings brought into the system |
July 1, 2027 | QazETA becomes mandatory — entry may be refused without it |
Throughout the transition period, which runs until June 30, 2027, the absence of an ETA will not be grounds for refusal. Border officers will instead inform travellers of the requirement.
The Permit Is Free
Earlier reporting suggested the authorization would carry a fee of several thousand tenge. The final rules do not.
The decree establishes zero cost for processing the electronic permit. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has clarified that obtaining QazETA is not mandatory during the testing phase and that no fee is charged.
What Travellers Need to Know
The core requirements are straightforward:
Application timing: Submit at least 72 hours before planned entry
Validity: The authorization is valid for 180 calendar days
How to apply: Through the QazETA mobile app, available for iOS devices and Android devices
At the border: Present the same identity document used in the application
A crucial distinction: the 180-day validity refers to the authorization itself, not the permitted length of stay. How long a traveller may remain in Kazakhstan continues to depend on their nationality and the applicable visa-free regime.
Having a valid QazETA does not ensure entry. Border authorities have the right to deny admission according to Kazakh law.
Who Needs QazETA
The requirement targets nationals of countries that already enjoy visa-free access to Kazakhstan. That includes citizens of:
European countries, including France, Belgium and Switzerland
North America, including the United States and Canada
Asia-Pacific nations such as the UK, Japan, South Korea and Australia
Special visa-free agreement countries, including India, Iran and Turkey
Citizens of Eurasian Economic Union member states — Russia, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan — are also mentioned, though implementation details will need coordination with existing EAEU movement agreements.
Who Is Exempt
Several categories are exempt from the ETA requirement:
Exemption Category | Details |
Age | Children under 16 and people aged 65 and over |
Visa holders | Those holding a valid Kazakh visa |
Residents | Holders of temporary or permanent residence permits |
Transit passengers | Those remaining in the airport transit zone |
Diplomats | Official representatives and government delegation members |
Crew | Aircraft, ship and train crew under applicable regulations |
International transport drivers | Certain truck and coach drivers |
Other | Refugees, asylum seekers, and certain humanitarian mission participants |
Supporting Infrastructure Already in Place
Kazakhstan has been preparing for automated border processing for some time. Astana International Airport launched an Automated Border Control System in December 2025, with eight gates that verify passports and facial images through the Berkut Unified Information System in 15 to 20 seconds.
The country has deployed 54 Q-Gate biometric terminals across 11 checkpoints, with plans to add nearly 200 more by 2028.
What This Means for Travellers
The extended transition period gives travellers ample time to familiarise themselves with the system. For anyone planning a trip to Kazakhstan after July 2027, the practical takeaway is simple: download the QazETA app, apply at least three days before departure, and carry the same passport used in the application.
For now, the requirement remains voluntary during the testing phase. But the deadline is set, and the phased rollout begins in less than three weeks. Employers and travellers planning longer-term movements to Kazakhstan should also note the separate 2027 work permit quota application deadlines, which follow a different timetable.
