LONDON, October 6, 2026 — The UK government has begun rolling out contactless border technology at airports across the country, allowing British passport holders to clear immigration using facial recognition alone. The initiative, announced in an official government release titled Airports to go contactless in major boost for UK passengers, marks a significant shift in how travelers experience UK border control.

The phased rollout begins at East Midlands Airport, initially for British citizens, before expanding to more airports and other nationalities already eligible for eGates over the coming months.

How Contactless eGates Work

The new system eliminates the need for traditional passport scanning at eGates. The official announcement describes the process as follows:

  1. Passengers approach an eGate and have their photograph taken

  2. The system compares the live image with verified immigration, travel, and passport details

  3. The eGate opens automatically once these verifications are completed

The technology employs advanced facial recognition to confirm identity before the UK's comprehensive border security checks are conducted. Legitimate travelers can then pass through without needing to place their passport on the eGate reader.

If additional checks are necessary, passengers will be required to place their passport on the reader or may be directed to a Border Force officer, as is currently the practice.

Which Airports Are Participating

The phased rollout starts at East Midlands Airport before expanding to Birmingham Airport and eventually other major UK airports by early 2027.

eGates are currently available at the following UK airports:

Airports with eGates

Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, Newcastle, Stansted

Other UK eGates will continue to operate as they do today until upgraded. The rollout involves software updates rather than replacing the physical eGates.

How Much Faster Is It?

According to government testing, the new contactless system is 25% faster than using a passport at an eGate. This increase in speed is anticipated to decrease border-processing times and queues, especially during peak travel times.

What Does NOT Change

Despite the technological shift, several important rules remain unchanged:

  • Immigration and entry requirements are unaffected

  • Travelers must still carry their physical passports for check-in, boarding, and travel

  • Border Force officers will continue to monitor all eGates and offer assistance

  • Passengers should keep their passport with them at all times

The government notes that dual nationals should travel on a valid British passport or hold a Certificate of Entitlement to minimise potential delays at the border.

Official Reaction

Phil Douglas, Director General of Border Force, described the implementation as "a win for travelers coming to our brilliant country," noting that "by utilizing state-of-the-art technology, we are making journeys smoother and faster, while fully maintaining the UK's robust border security."

Karen Dee, chief executive of AirportsUK, stated that the change "will be excellent news for the passenger" and highlights how UK airports "continue to lead in adopting new technologies to keep our borders safe."

Steve Griffiths, Managing Director of East Midlands Airport, expressed enthusiasm about being "the first UK airport to have contactless eGates introduced by Border Force."

Chris Wilson, Head of Terminal & Capacity Planning at Birmingham Airport, mentioned that customers "will benefit from this new speedier and smoother arrival through the border."

Broader Border Modernisation

This modification builds upon other recent advancements in the UK's border system, such as the launch of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme, enabling officials to detect potential security threats before individuals travel to the UK.

It also follows the government's decision in the summer of 2026 to extend eGates access to children aged eight and above, facilitating easier travel for families.

The announcement also emphasized recent enforcement statistics, indicating that small boat arrivals in June, July, and August 2026 were at their lowest in six years, supported by a payment-by-results agreement with France. More than 80,000 individuals without the right to remain in the UK have been removed or returned since the election.
