Canada Adds UK to CPTPP Work Permit Provisions – New LMIA-Exempt Pathway for British Professionals

OTTAWA, September11, 2026 — Canada has officially added the United Kingdom as an eligible country under the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), opening a new LMIA-exempt work permit pathway for British professionals and technicians. The change took effect on September 1, 2026, when the UK's accession to the CPTPP entered into force with Canada, and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated its program delivery instructions the following day.

What Is the CPTPP?
The CPTPP is an international trade agreement between Canada and multiple partner countries. Under its Professionals and Technicians category, eligible foreign nationals may obtain a Canadian work permit through the International Mobility Program (IMP) under exemption code T52, bypassing the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) process entirely.
With the UK's addition, the CPTPP now covers 12 partner economies: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
What Changed for UK Nationals?
Before September 1, 2026, British citizens could not access CPTPP work permit provisions. Now, UK nationals working in designated professional fields may qualify if they meet the following requirements:

Eligible Occupations
The list of eligible professions is country-specific and can be found in Annex 12-A Section D of the CPTPP. Eligible fields include:
Engineering: Civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, and other engineering disciplines
Technology: Software developers, IT professionals, computer systems analysts
Finance: Accountants, financial analysts, investment professionals
Business & Management: Business consultants, management professionals
Science: Scientific researchers, laboratory technicians
Architecture: Architects and architectural technologists
Technician occupations may include civil engineering technologists, computer and IT technicians, construction inspectors and estimators, electrical and electronics specialists, aircraft mechanics, industrial designers, and land survey technologists.
Application Process
The application process for UK nationals under the CPTPP involves several steps:
