Portugal's AIMA launches mandatory online portal for Golden Visa renewals from 16 February 2026 - all applications and fee payments now digital

Portugal's Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) has officially launched exclusive online processing for Portugal Golden Visa renewals (officially known as Residence Permit for Investment or ARI). Starting today, 16 February 2026, all renewal applications and fee payments must be submitted digitally through the dedicated AIMA Renewals Portal, marking a major step towards full digitalisation of the process.

Key Changes for Golden Visa Holders

This update applies to all ARI holders, including main applicants and family members under reunification. Previously, renewals involved in-person submissions, but now:

  • Renewal requests and all fee payments are handled exclusively online via the portal.

  • In-person appointments (if already scheduled) will be retained only for biometric data collection (fingerprints and photo).

  • No in-person visits are required for submitting documents or paying fees.

The shift aims to streamline procedures, reduce processing times, minimise travel, enhance security, and improve the overall experience for investors. The portal builds on earlier phased rollouts for other residence permits, with ARI-specific access opening today.

Indian investors, a significant group in the Portugal Golden Visa program, will benefit from the faster digital process, especially those managing renewals remotely.

How to Renew Your Golden Visa Online

  1. Access the AIMA Renewals Portal at the official link below.

  2. Log in or create an account using your existing details.

  3. Upload required documents (e.g., proof of investment maintenance, minimum stay compliance, clean criminal record, health insurance).

  4. Pay the applicable fees digitally (amounts to be confirmed on the portal).

  5. Attend a biometric appointment if notified (scheduled separately).

After submission, applicants receive immediate confirmation, with approvals leading to a digital proof of renewal (often including a QR code for verification).

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does this change apply to my existing renewal appointment?

Yes. Keep any scheduled in-person appointment for biometrics only. Submit the application and pay fees online starting today.

Q: What if my permit has already expired?

Expired ARI permits remain valid pending renewal. Use the portal immediately if eligible; contact AIMA for specific cases.

Q: Are family members included?

Yes. Reunited family members must also renew through the same online portal.

Q: When will I receive my new residence card?

After online approval and biometrics, the new card will be issued and mailed. Processing times are expected to improve with digital submission.

Q: Is the Golden Visa program still open to new applicants?

Yes, though investment options have evolved (real estate removed in 2023). Renewals for existing holders are unaffected by program changes.
