India Approves Five-Year Extension of IVFRT Digital Immigration and Visa Scheme to 2031
Updated: 3 minutes ago
NEW DELHI, October 7, 2026 — India's Union Cabinet has approved a five-year extension of the Immigration, Visa, Foreigners Registration and Tracking programme, committing Rs 1,800 crore to modernise the digital backbone behind every Indian visa, residence permit and exit permit.
The decision, announced by the Prime Minister's Office, extends the scheme from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2031. The programme, first cleared in 2010, now links 117 immigration check-posts, 15 Foreigners Regional Registration Offices and more than 850 district-level registration units through a single platform.
What the System Already Delivers
The numbers behind IVFRT are striking. Government data show 91.24 percent of e-visa applications are now cleared within 72 hours. Average clearance time at immigration counters has fallen from five to six minutes to roughly two and a half to three minutes, including biometric verification.
That shift matters most at India's busiest airports, where immigration queues have long been the weakest link in the arrival experience. The platform has progressively replaced paper forms with online applications, biometric enrolment and real-time traveller analytics.
Where the Next Phase Focuses
The Cabinet note identifies three priorities for the extension period:
Priority | Scope |
Emerging technology | Mobile-based services and self-service kiosks for seamless passenger movement |
Core infrastructure | Upgrading immigration check-posts, FRRO offices and data centre capacity |
Platform transformation | Unified digital platform, restructured application architecture and strengthened deployment framework |
The new mandate also aligns IVFRT with the Immigration and Foreigners Act 2025, which came into force on July 1, 2025. The Act streamlined the legal framework for foreigners entering, staying in and exiting India. The Cabinet concluded that strengthening IVFRT was essential to meet future challenges in immigration control, foreigner management and illegal migration.
Why This Matters for Employers
IVFRT is the plumbing beneath every corporate relocation to India. Faster processing, combined with an expected expansion of automated e-gates under the Fast-Track Immigration-Trusted Traveller Programme, should cut dwell times for inbound executives and reduce the risk of missed connections at major hubs.
The Cabinet note signals something more consequential. Real-time overstay alerts and AI-based risk scoring are positioned as compliance tools that will become mandatory for enterprises hosting foreign assignees.
Mobility managers should act on three fronts: review onboarding checklists for foreign nationals, confirm that staff passports carry biometric data compatible with the planned self-service kiosks, and budget for possible API integrations with the revamped portal.
Tourism and MICE Operators See Opportunity
The platform's scalability opens the door to visa categories already discussed in industry consultations, including five-year multiple-entry MICE visas and frictionless cruise passenger clearance.
The government framed IVFRT as delivering "huge positive externalities" for international carriage, business, trade and tourism, supporting economic growth and employment.
