ALGIERS, September 7, 2026 — Algeria has reviewed and reaffirmed the rules for its southern visa‑on‑arrival system, confirming that foreign tourists heading to Sahara destinations such as Djanet and Tamanrasset must complete a pre‑arranged process through an accredited Algerian travel agency before they can board a flight.

The system, introduced in 2023, has attracted approximately 39,000 tourists from 120 nationalities. However, official guidance makes clear that the mechanism is not an unrestricted visa‑on‑arrival program—travellers cannot simply purchase a flight and expect to complete formalities upon landing.

The visa‑on‑arrival facility applies to organised Saharan tourism covering the following southern wilayas (provinces):

• Adrar, Laghouat, Biskra, Bechar, Tamanrasset, Djelfa, Msila, Ouargla, El‑Bayad, Illizi, Tindouf, El Oued, Naâma, Ghardaia, Timimoune, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Ouled Djalel, Béni Abbès, Ain Salah, Ain Guezzam, Touggourt, Djanet, El M’Ghair, El Menia

At least one of these destinations must be included in the tourist programme offered by the accredited agency.

Important Restrictions

• Independent travel without an accredited agency is not eligible under this scheme

• The Sahara facility does not grant unrestricted Algeria‑wide access

• Travel outside the qualifying southern itinerary requires standard consular visa procedures

• The visa is valid for a maximum of 30 days—longer stays should not be assumed

• The facility is described as exceptional and temporary

Tourism Impact and Future Plans

Algeria’s Ministry of Tourism and Handicrafts reported that the mechanism has already attracted approximately 39,000 tourists representing 120 nationalities. For the 2024/2025 season, the Algerian Sahara attracted 47,000 foreign visitors and a total of 470,000 including domestic tourists.

The government is aiming to make the Algerian Sahara the leading destination for discovery, adventure, and cultural tourism in North Africa, targeting 1.5 million visitors by 2029.

Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts Houria Meddahi confirmed that the system will be further developed, including:

• Expanding the visa‑on‑arrival system to other wilayas with strong tourism potential

• Including a greater number of accredited travel agencies

• Implementing a fully digitised procedure

• Opening direct flights from European and Asian capitals to southern airports such as Djanet, Tamanrasset, and Adrar
