Washington D.C., 2 July 2026 — U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced a short-term automatic extension of Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) for individuals granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Burma (Myanmar), Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen until July 10, 2026.
The brief extension provides limited relief for affected TPS beneficiaries while litigation and policy decisions continue following the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling allowing the termination of TPS for Haiti and Syria.
Which TPS EADs Are Extended?
The automatic extension applies to the following EADs with these original expiration dates:
Burma (Myanmar): Nov. 25, 2025, May 25, 2024, or Nov. 25, 2022.
Ethiopia: June 12, 2024, and Dec. 12, 2025.
Somalia: March 17, 2023, September 17, 2024, or March 17, 2026.
South Sudan: Nov. 3, 2023, May 3, 2025, or Nov. 3, 2025.
Yemen: March 3, 2023, Sept. 3, 2024, or March 3, 2026.
Employers and beneficiaries should note that these EADs remain valid through July 10, 2026, for employment purposes.
Context: Supreme Court TPS Decision
The short extension comes just days after the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision allowing the Trump Administration to proceed with the termination of TPS designations for Haiti and Syria. USCIS stated that the July 10 extension for the above countries is intended as temporary relief until lower courts issue decisions consistent with the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Ongoing cases affected include:
Aung DOE et al. v. Noem et al. (Burma/Myanmar)
African Communities Together et al. v. Noem et al. (Ethiopia, Somalia, South Sudan)
Doe v. Noem et al. (Yemen)
What TPS Beneficiaries and Employers Should Do
Continue Working: EADs remain valid through July 10, 2026.
Monitor Updates: Watch for further USCIS announcements as litigation progresses.
Prepare for Potential Changes: Beneficiaries should consult immigration counsel regarding alternative relief options if TPS designations are ultimately terminated.
Employers: Continue accepting extended EADs as valid proof of work authorization until the new expiration date.
