Major UK Immigration Rule Changes take effect TODAY (26 March 2026) – what applicants must know now.

The UK Home Office has rolled out significant updates to the Immigration Rules today through Statement of Changes HC 1691. These changes, which came into force on 26 March 2026, introduce a new "Visa Brake" mechanism, stricter criminality rules, salary compliance requirements, and more.

This is one of the biggest immigration shake-ups of 2026 so far and will directly impact thousands of Skilled Worker, Student, Global Business Mobility, and settlement applicants worldwide.

Key Changes Effective 26 March 2026

  • New "Visa Brake" Restrictions Nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan will face automatic refusal for Student visa applications. Afghan nationals are also barred from new Skilled Worker visa applications. These measures aim to reduce visa-linked asylum claims. Applications submitted before today will still be considered under the old rules.

  • Tougher Criminality Rules Anyone with a suspended prison sentence of 12 months or more (even if served abroad or long ago) now faces mandatory refusal or cancellation of most UK visas and permissions. This applies across work, study, family, and visitor routes.

  • Skilled Worker Salary Compliance Sponsors and applicants must now meet the salary threshold in every pay period — not just annually. This change tightens compliance for employers and could affect ongoing and future applications.

  • Positive Changes for Indian Nationals Indian service suppliers can now access the Global Business Mobility (GBM) Service Supplier route for up to 12 months (subject to an annual cap of 1,800 places) under the UK-India trade agreement.

  • Other Notable Updates

    • Global Business Mobility secondment route: Overseas employment requirement reduced from 12 to 6 months.

    • English language requirement for settlement will rise to B2 level from 26 March 2027 (giving applicants time to prepare).

    • Children of victims of domestic violence no longer need to meet maintenance/accommodation requirements in certain cases.

Who Is Most Affected?

  • Prospective international students from the four restricted countries

  • Afghan professionals seeking Skilled Worker visas

  • Employers sponsoring foreign workers

  • Applicants with past criminal records (including suspended sentences)

  • Indian service providers and businesses using GBM routes

What Should You Do Next?

If you have a pending application, check the exact submission date carefully — transitional provisions apply in many cases.

For those planning future applications, act quickly where possible and ensure full compliance with the new salary and criminality rules.
