UK Electronic Travel Authorisation ETA scheme now fully live for all 85 visa-free nationalities

London, 5 July 2026 — The UK Home Office has officially confirmed that its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme is now fully operational for citizens of all 85 nationalities who can visit Britain without a traditional visa.

The milestone brings the UK into line with similar digital pre-travel systems such as the US ESTA and the upcoming EU ETIAS, marking a major shift in how short-term visitors enter the country.

Key Details of the UK ETA Scheme

  • Who Needs an ETA: All short-term visitors who are not British or Irish citizens must obtain an ETA, a visa, or hold a valid UK immigration status linked to an eVisa before boarding any carrier to the UK.

  • Cost: £16 per application.

  • Validity: Two years or until the passport expires (whichever comes first).

  • Multiple Entries: Allows unlimited short visits during the validity period.

  • Processing Time: Usually approved within minutes, though some applications may take up to three days.

The phased rollout began with Qatari nationals in 2023 and concluded this week with the inclusion of citizens from the United States, Canada, and the 26 EU member states.

Practical Advice for Travellers

  • Apply for your ETA well in advance of travel.

  • Ensure your passport is valid and machine-readable.

  • Keep your ETA approval confirmation (usually sent via email) accessible during travel.

  • Note that an approved ETA is not a guarantee of entry — final decision rests with UK border officers.
