UAE launches Blue Residency Visa 2026: 10-year renewable residency for environmental and sustainability talent – applications now open.

Dubai, April 13, 2026 — The United Arab Emirates has officially opened applications for its new Blue Residency Visa, a groundbreaking 10-year renewable residency program designed to attract top global talent in environmental protection, climate change, sustainability, and renewable energy sectors.

This specialized long-term residency permit, announced by the UAE government, marks a strategic move to position the country as a global leader in green innovation and climate action while addressing the growing need for specialized expertise in these critical fields.

Key Features of the Blue Residency Visa

  • Validity: 10 years, renewable indefinitely

  • Work Rights: Does not automatically grant the right to work — holders must obtain a separate work authorization sponsored by an employer

  • Family Sponsorship: Blue Residency Visa holders can sponsor spouses, children of any age, and parents for dependent Blue Residency Visas

  • Domestic Workers: Unlimited sponsorship of domestic worker visas (subject to financial capacity)

  • Health & Financial Requirements: Applicants must maintain valid UAE health insurance and demonstrate the ability to support themselves and dependents without relying on government assistance

The visa is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to attract and retain high-impact professionals who can contribute to the country’s ambitious environmental and sustainability goals under initiatives like the UAE Net Zero by 2050 and the Green Agenda.

Who Qualifies for the Blue Residency Visa?

The program targets distinguished individuals across several categories in the environmental sector:

1. Distinguished Contributors Individuals who have made outstanding contributions in environmental protection, climate change, sustainability, or renewable energy. This includes members of recognized international organizations, recipients of prestigious awards, or those who have provided financial support of at least AED 1,000,000 to approved environmental initiatives in the UAE.

2. Scientists and Researchers Individuals with master's or doctorate degrees in relevant fields from leading global universities, or those who have demonstrated significant research impact and accomplishments in developing R&D outcomes within the UAE's environmental sector.

3. Investors Individuals investing at least AED 2,000,000 in projects, businesses, or companies that advance UAE environmental goals. The investment must not be financed through loans.

4. SME Owners and Partners Owners or partners in small-to-medium enterprises operating in the environmental sector with annual revenue of at least AED 1,000,000, accredited by the Ministry of Economy or another competent UAE authority.

5. Business Incubator-Approved Entrepreneurs Entrepreneurs whose environmental sector projects have been approved by a UAE-accredited business incubator, with the project to be conducted in the UAE.

6. Inventors and Innovators Holders of patents that contribute to UAE environmental goals, approved by the Ministry of Economy or relevant authorities.

7. Elite Specialists Senior professionals (e.g., executive directors or specialists) in public or private environmental institutions in the UAE, holding at least a bachelor’s degree and nominated by their employer for exceptional expertise.

Important Additional Pathways

  • Conversion from Golden Visa: Current Golden Visa holders can convert to the Blue Residency Visa if they meet the specific eligibility criteria and pay applicable fees.

  • Family and Domestic Worker Sponsorship: Blue Residency holders enjoy strong family sponsorship rights and can sponsor an unlimited number of domestic workers (standard residence visas, not Blue Residency).
