Turkmenistan Just Quietly Launched an e-Visa Portal — and Tourists No Longer Need an Invitation Letter
Updated: 9 hours ago
ASHGABAT, October 3, 2026 — Turkmenistan has long been one of the hardest countries on Earth to visit. That just changed — quietly, and almost overnight.
Just 48 hours after officially launching its electronic visa on October 1, 2026, the Central Asian nation has unveiled a fully detailed e-Visa portal that reveals the practical workings of its new system. And for tourists, there's a headline-grabbing twist: no invitation letter required.
The official portal — evisa.migration.gov.tm — went live on October 2, 2026, allowing travelers to explore the scheme launched the day before by the National Migration Service.
Why This Actually Matters
For years, traveling to Turkmenistan involved navigating a complex process: obtaining a letter of invitation from a local agency, getting it approved by the National Migration Service, and then waiting. This procedure discouraged all but the most resolute travelers.
Now, that obstacle has been removed — at least for tourists.
The portal confirms travelers can now submit an e-Visa application online, upload documents, pay official fees, and track their application status in real time. Since October 1, 2026, all electronic visa operations must go through this dedicated system.
Three e-Visas, One Portal
The new platform offers three categories of electronic visas:
Visa Type | Purpose |
e-TU | Tourist travel |
e-BS | Business trips, stays up to 30 days |
e-HM | Humanitarian stays |
For all three, applicants need at minimum:
A copy of the biographical page of the passport, valid for at least six months from entry
A recent colour passport photo on a white background meeting ICAO standards
A valid email address for notifications and visa transmission
The Tourist Game-Changer: No Invitation Letter
Here's where it gets interesting.
For the e-TU tourist visa, the portal lists no invitation letter among required documents. Travel itinerary or hotel booking confirmation and medical insurance? Classified as optional.
This is a dramatic departure from Turkmenistan's traditional tourist procedure — and it aligns with the 2025 legislative reform that amended the country's migration law to officially introduce the e-Visa, explicitly stating that an invitation would not be necessary in the electronic procedure.
But not everyone gets a free pass. The rules differ sharply for the other two categories:
e-BS (Business): Requires an invitation letter from a company or organization registered in Turkmenistan, including the applicant's role
e-HM (Humanitarian): Requires an official letter from a humanitarian organization or UN agency confirming the mission
Speed: From 24 Hours to 7 Days
Turkmenistan is offering three processing tiers:
Procedure | Processing Time |
Regular | Within 7 working days |
Urgent | Within 3 working days |
Super Urgent | 24-hour turnaround |
The portal does not yet publish a fixed price list. Authorities say the amount is calculated during the application process and depends on case parameters. Payment is made online at submission, all amounts displayed in US dollars, with bank fees not included.
Everything From One Dashboard
After logging in, applicants should be able to complete their application, submit documents, pay fees, and track processing — all from the same portal.
The platform also offers:
A public status check function (requiring at least two pieces of information: name, passport number, or visa number)
A feature to transfer an e-Visa to a new passport when a travel document is renewed after visa issuance
The service is available in English, Russian, and Turkmen.

One Catch: No Account Creation Yet
Before you rush to apply, there's a snag.
The "Login to Portal" button leads to a page requesting a username and password — but as of October 2, checks by travel formalities teams from Visasupdate found no "Register" or "Create Account" button on the public pages.
This suggests the portal deployment is not yet fully complete, and it remains unclear how new applicants should obtain credentials. The architecture and main conditions are clear — but the final on-ramp is still under construction.
Don't Confuse It With This Other System
Turkmenistan has deployed two separate digital platforms — and mixing them up could cause confusion:
Platform | Purpose |
e-Visa applications for entry | |
Registration of foreign nationals already in Turkmenistan |
The registration portal allows online registration at the place of residence, extensions, and deregistration — without visiting a Migration Service office. Together, they form the backbone of Turkmenistan's digitization push for entry and residence formalities.
