Thailand Opens eGates to 33 Nationalities at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport — But Four Conditions Apply

BANGKOK, September 21, 2026 — Thailand has expanded its automated immigration gates at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport to travelers from 33 nationalities, including citizens of France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada, in a major push to reduce the lengthy queues that have frustrated international arrivals.
The expansion adds 31 new countries to the existing eGate access previously limited to Singapore and Hong Kong passport holders .
The 33 Eligible Nationalities
The full list of eGate-eligible passport holders now includes :

Notably absent: The United States is not among the eligible nationalities. American passport holders must continue to use staffed immigration counters .
Four Conditions You Must Meet
The expansion does not mean every traveler from an eligible country can walk straight to an eGate. Thai immigration officials have confirmed that four conditions must be satisfied :
1. You Must Have Previously Entered Thailand on the Same Passport
The automated system is designed primarily for returning visitors whose biometric data is already stored in Thailand's immigration database. Travelers using the eGate must generally have visited Thailand at least once before using the same passport .
2. Biometric Data Must Already Be on File
First-time visitors from eligible countries must still report to a staffed immigration counter. During that first entry, officers collect fingerprints and facial recognition data. Only on subsequent visits can the traveler use the eGate .
3. You Must Be Entering Under Visa Exemption
The eGates are currently available only to travelers entering Thailand under visa exemption. Anyone entering on a DTV, education visa, work visa (Non-B), or any other Thai visa must still see an immigration officer .
4. TDAC Must Be Completed Before Arrival
Every traveler is required to fill out the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online prior to arrival. Thai authorities have cautioned that fraudulent websites mimic the official government site and try to unlawfully charge travelers. The official TDAC portal is free of charge.

What Happens at the eGate
Travelers using the automated system should note one key difference from traditional border control: the eGate may issue a control slip rather than a physical passport stamp .
The control slip confirms entry information and should be retained during the stay in Thailand.
