STOCKHOLM, August 10, 2026 — Sweden has introduced a significant change to its permanent residence rules, allowing temporary residence permit holders to apply for permanent residence as soon as they satisfy the applicable qualification period — rather than waiting until their current permit is due for renewal.
The amendment, effective June 11, 2026, applies to work permit holders who have fulfilled the four-year requirement, as well as EU Blue Card and researcher permit holders who qualify after three years. Once granted, the temporary permit can be revoked and replaced by the permanent residence permit.
