Sweden supercharges EU Blue Card to 4 years and seasonal work permits to 9 months from June 1, 2026.

Stockholm, March 23, 2026 — Sweden is rolling out one of the most employer-friendly immigration reforms in years. From June 1, 2026, the validity period of the EU Blue Card will double from two to four years, while seasonal work permits will be extended from six to nine months within any 12-month period.

The changes, formally adopted by the Swedish government in late 2025 and now confirmed by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket), aim to make Sweden significantly more competitive in the global race for skilled professionals and flexible seasonal labour.

EU Blue Card – Now Four Years of Stability

The EU Blue Card is the flagship residence permit for highly qualified non-EU workers. Until May 31, 2026, successful applicants receive an initial two-year card (renewable). From June 1:

  • New validity: Four years on first issuance (provided the employment contract covers at least that period)

  • Renewal: Can be extended for another four years if the job continues

  • Salary threshold: Remains unchanged at the moment (currently 1.5× median salary ≈ SEK 55,650 gross/month in 2026), but the longer validity reduces administrative burden and job-hopping pressure

Why it matters: Four years of guaranteed residence gives engineers, IT specialists, doctors, researchers and other highly qualified professionals far greater certainty when relocating with family, buying property or planning long-term life in Sweden. Employers benefit from a more stable talent pipeline — no need to restart the permit process after only two years.

Seasonal Work Permits – Nine Months Instead of Six

Sweden’s seasonal work permit (säsongsarbete) covers agriculture, forestry, tourism, hospitality and berry-picking. The previous maximum duration was six months per calendar year. Starting June 1, 2026:

  • New maximum: Nine months within any rolling 12-month period

  • No calendar-year reset — the 12-month window is personal to each worker

  • Still no path to permanent residence — the permit remains strictly temporary

Practical impact: Many seasonal employers (especially in berry-picking, tourism and greenhouse farming) can now plan longer contracts, reducing turnover and training costs. Workers from countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, India and Ukraine gain up to 50% more earning time per stay.

Broader Context – Sweden’s 2026 Immigration Balancing Act

The longer validity periods arrive alongside stricter rules in other areas:

  • From June 1, 2026, the general work-permit salary floor rises to SEK 33,390 gross/month (90% of the median wage)

  • Shortage-occupation exemptions are expected to protect healthcare, education and certain technical roles from the full increase

The government is clearly trying to thread the needle: make Sweden more attractive to genuinely high-skilled and seasonal workers while filtering out low-wage labour migration.

What Employers & Workers Should Do Before June 1, 2026

For EU Blue Card applicants

  • Submit before June 1 if you want the current two-year card (easier renewal in some cases)

  • Prepare for four-year contracts — employers should offer longer employment agreements

For seasonal employers & workers

  • Plan nine-month contracts from June onward

  • Existing six-month permits issued before June 1 remain valid only for six months

Frequently Asked Questions (Quick View)

Can I extend a two-year Blue Card issued before June 2026 to four years?

No — extensions follow the rules at the time of extension. Pre-June cards remain on the two-year cycle.

Does the nine-month seasonal limit reset every calendar year?

No — it is a rolling 12-month period personal to each worker.

Will healthcare workers be exempt from the new salary floor?

Shortage occupations will likely receive exemptions — official list expected before June.

Does longer validity affect family reunification?

Yes — four-year Blue Card holders can sponsor family from day one with more stability.

Sweden’s 2026 reform package sends a clear message: the country wants to keep and attract high-skilled talent and reliable seasonal workers for longer periods, while continuing to raise the bar against low-wage migration. For many professionals and employers, the change could be the deciding factor in choosing Sweden over other European destinations.
