Ireland immigration renewal timelines 2026

Dublin, 1 July 2026 — Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has provided a much-needed update on current online residence permit renewal processing times, revealing significant improvements as additional staff and operational enhancements take effect.

Applicants frustrated by earlier delays can now expect faster turnaround times, with many categories being processed within 6 to 8 weeks from submission, while no category currently exceeds 16 weeks.

Current Processing Timelines for Online Renewals

According to the latest ISD update:

  • Standard Categories: Approximately 6–8 weeks from application submission.

  • Maximum Wait Time: No category is currently exceeding 16 weeks.

  • Factors Affecting Processing: Volume of applications, complexity of individual cases, requests for additional information, and peak periods.

ISD emphasised that it is actively working to increase capacity and reduce wait times further, assigning additional staff specifically to renewal processing.

How to Check Your Renewal Application Status

Applicants can monitor progress through two official channels:

  1. Live Processing Dates — Updated every Monday by category on the ISD website: Renewing your registration permission.

  2. Customer Service Portal — Log in or register at portal.irishimmigration.ie to check individual application status.

Important Guidance for Applicants and Employers

When to Apply:

  • You can submit your renewal application up to 12 weeks before your current IRP card expires.

  • This creates a generous 24-week window (12 weeks before + 12 weeks after expiry) to apply and receive a new card.

Employment Rights During Renewal:

  • Employers can continue employing someone awaiting renewal for up to 12 weeks after expiry, provided the renewal application was submitted before the current IRP expired.

  • Full details are available in the official Notice to Employers.

Travel and Emergency Situations:

  • For urgent travel needs, applicants can request an expedited renewal or emergency re-entry visa. Proof of travel (e.g., flight booking) and a clear explanation of the emergency are required. Requests are assessed case-by-case.
