Lisbon, May 25, 2026 — Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) has introduced a new digital tool that significantly simplifies the process of obtaining residence permits for foreign-born babies in Portugal.
The new online scheduling system allows parents of children born on Portuguese soil to easily request appointments for residency under Article 124 of the Foreigners Law. This legal provision grants residency rights to minors born in Portugal to foreign parents who already hold valid residence permits.
How the New Digital System Works
Parents can now apply entirely online through AIMA’s official contact platform:
Log into the AIMA portal
Select “Residence Permit” as the category
Choose the specific option: “Scheduling appointments for minors born in Portugal”
Fill in the child’s personal details (the minor is the actual rights holder)
Upload all required documents
Each child requires a separate individual application.
Required Documents
To prevent automatic rejection, applicants must submit clear scanned copies of:
The child’s Portuguese birth certificate (issued by the Civil Registry)
Passport of the legally residing parent
Valid residence title of that parent
Residence document of the other parent (if applicable)
Critical 6-Month Deadline
Parents have a strict legal window of 6 months from the date the child’s birth is registered to submit the application. Any request filed after this deadline will be automatically rejected.
Why This New Tool Is Important
Portugal has recorded a steady rise in births to foreign residents in recent years. The new digital system aims to:
Reduce bureaucracy and waiting times
Make the process more transparent and accessible
Ensure children born in Portugal to legal residents receive their residency rights promptly
Support family integration and long-term stability
AIMA emphasized that this service is exclusively for minors born in Portugal whose parents hold valid residence permits.
Practical Advice for Parents
Start the process as early as possible after birth registration
Prepare all documents in high-quality digital format
Double-check that all information matches the child’s official records
Attend the scheduled appointment with original documents
This initiative is a component of AIMA's comprehensive digital transformation program aimed at modernizing Portugal's immigration services and enhancing the experience for legal residents and their families.
