New Zealand Introduces Major Graduate Work Visa Reforms: New 6-Month Short-Term Visa & Expanded Post Study Work Visa for Graduate Diploma Holders

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced that from 16 November 2026, it will introduce a brand-new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa and significantly expand the eligibility of the Post Study Work Visa (PSWV) . These changes, part of the government's International Education "Going for Growth" plan, are designed to better align graduate pathways with the country's workforce needs.
Short-Term Graduate Work Visa: 6-Month Open Work Rights
The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa provides eligible international graduates who have completed their studies in New Zealand with up to six months of open work rights. This pathway is intended to allow graduates time to secure employment and, where appropriate, transition to an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) .

Key Restrictions
One-time grant: The visa cannot be extended or issued more than once
No business ownership: Holders must work under an employment agreement or contract for services
No family sponsorship: Holders cannot support partners for work visas or children for Dependent Child Student Visas. Family members may apply for visitor visas or other visas in their own right
Future study restrictions: Individuals who have held this visa will not be granted a subsequent student visa unless they enrol in a bachelor's degree or higher-level qualification that makes them eligible for a PSWV
Post Study Work Visa Expanded: Graduate Diploma Holders Now Eligible
In parallel, from 16 November 2026, PSWV eligibility will be expanded to include graduates who have completed a Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7, provided they also hold a bachelor's degree obtained either in New Zealand or overseas.

An International Qualification Assessment (IQA) will not be required for overseas bachelor's degrees, although Immigration New Zealand may verify qualification authenticity for immigration purposes.
Digital Application Process
From 16 November 2026, applications for both the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa and the Post Study Work Visa must be submitted through the enhanced Immigration Online platform.
Paper applications for the Post Study Work Visa will no longer be accepted from this date
Applications submitted on paper by 15 November 2026 will still be processed

Policy Background
These changes are part of the New Zealand government's International Education Going for Growth Plan, which aims to optimise graduate employment outcomes and better align them with labour market demands while supporting international education growth and maintaining education quality.
For many international students, particularly from India, the new policies provide a clearer pathway from study to employment. However, the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa is intended as a short-term bridge rather than a long-term work solution.
