Wellington, 19 June 2026 — New Zealand is expanding pathways for former refugees to build careers in the healthcare sector with the second intake of the Refugee Health Scholarship Programme.
This targeted initiative aims to address health workforce shortages while promoting greater diversity, inclusion, and culturally responsive care across the country’s hospitals, clinics, and community health services.
About the Refugee Health Scholarship Programme
Developed through a collaboration between the National Leadership and Coordination Service, MBIE (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment), the Ministry of Health, and Health New Zealand – Te Whatu Ora, the scholarship supports former refugees and their children in accessing education, training, and meaningful employment in health-related fields.

Strengthen New Zealand’s health workforce with more diverse talent
Improve employment outcomes for former refugees and their families
Deliver more equitable and culturally competent healthcare services
Build long-term integration and community resilience
