Wellington, May 20, 2026 — Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced a major upgrade to its visa processing system, with Group Visitor Visas and Tour Escort Visitor Visas transitioning to the enhanced Immigration Online platform starting 20 July 2026.

This latest phase of the “Our Future Services” programme represents a significant step toward a fully modernised, digital-first immigration system designed to deliver faster processing, better user experience, and improved risk management.

New Zealand’s group and tour escort visitor visas go fully digital from July 20, 2026.

What’s Changing?

From 20 July 2026, the following visa categories will only be accepted through the new enhanced Immigration Online system:

  • Group Visitor Visa (General)

  • Group Visitor Visa (Approved Destination Status – ADS)

  • Tour Escort Visitor Visa

  • General Visitor Visa for ADS Free and Independent Travelers (FIT)

Applications submitted before this date will continue under the current system, but all new applications after 20 July will be automatically directed to the upgraded platform.

Key Benefits of the New System

Immigration New Zealand has designed the enhanced platform based on extensive feedback from visa processing staff, immigration professionals, tourism operators, and ADS agents. The improvements include:

  • Simpler and more intuitive application forms

  • Better guidance and clearer instructions throughout the process

  • Ability to share Group Visitor Visa applications with other group members, tour leaders, and agency staff

  • Improved real-time application tracking

  • Stronger self-service capabilities

  • Faster overall processing times (expected)

The new system also leverages automation and smart data tools to identify risks earlier while providing applicants with a smoother, more transparent experience.

Why This Change Matters

New Zealand is heavily dependent on tourism as a key economic driver. Group tours and escorted travel — particularly from key markets such as China under the ADS scheme — form an important segment of inbound tourism.

By moving these high-volume visa categories to a modern digital platform, INZ aims to:

  • Reduce processing delays

  • Minimise errors and incomplete applications

  • Improve the experience for both applicants and tourism operators

  • Strengthen overall system integrity

Paper-based applications will continue for now, but INZ has indicated this may change in the future as more visa types transition to the online system.

Practical Advice for Applicants and Agents

  • Plan ahead — submit applications before 20 July 2026 if you prefer the current system.

  • Familiarise yourself with the new enhanced Immigration Online platform in advance.

  • Ensure all group members and supporting staff have the necessary access to collaborate on applications.

  • Keep documents ready in clear, high-quality digital format.

  • Regularly check the official Immigration New Zealand website for updated guides closer to the transition date.

Broader Digital Transformation

This transition is part of a wider programme to move all visa types onto the enhanced Immigration Online platform. Since its introduction in 2021, INZ has already successfully migrated several categories, including student visas, Accredited Employer Work Visas, and permanent resident applications.

The ultimate goal is a fully digital, efficient, and user-centric immigration system that supports New Zealand’s economic recovery while maintaining strong border security.
