The New Zealand government has unveiled a significant overhaul of its Skilled Migrant Category Reforms, introducing two new residence pathways set to take effect in August 2026. These changes are designed to attract and retain a wider range of skilled workers by revising work experience rules, removing wage progression hurdles, and increasing the value of New Zealand qualifications.

Until the new system is implemented in August 2026, the current SMC settings, including the simplified points system introduced in 2023, will remain in place.

Key Features of the Skilled Migrant Category Reforms

The upcoming Skilled Migrant Category Reforms will introduce a more flexible framework with two distinct streams to cater to both professionals and tradespeople.

  • Skilled Work Experience Pathway: For roles in ANZSCO skill levels 1-3, requiring at least five years of relevant experience (with two years in New Zealand earning at least 1.1 times the median wage).

  • Trades & Technician Pathway: For those with a Level 4 or above qualification, requiring four years of post-qualification experience (including 18 months in New Zealand at or above the median wage).

How the Skilled Migrant Category Reforms Impact Applicants and Employers

The comprehensive Skilled Migrant Category Reforms are set to create several advantages for foreign nationals and employers alike.

  • For Foreign Nationals: The changes reduce work experience requirements from three years to a maximum of two for some, remove the obligation to secure wage increases, and give more points for New Zealand university-level qualifications. This eases financial pressure and expands eligibility.

  • For Employers: The reforms are expected to simplify the retention of international graduates and skilled workers, providing greater workforce stability. Employers should begin planning for these changes to ensure job offers and salary structures align with the new 2026 requirements.

These Skilled Migrant Category Reforms build upon the previous 2023 update, further refining New Zealand's approach to attracting global talent in line with its economic goals.
