DUBLIN, 3 November 2026 — Ireland's Employment Permits Portal will not come back online today as previously expected, the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment has confirmed, leaving employers without the primary channel for filing work permit applications.

The portal has been offline since 29 October 2026, when suspicious activity prompted authorities to take it down as a precaution. No new restoration date has been announced.

Ireland's Employment Permits Portal remains offline after unauthorised activity.

Why the Portal Is Down

The Department identified unauthorised activity on the system and moved quickly to contain it. Its response has included:

  • Suspending new registrations and then taking the portal fully offline

  • Restricting access to the administration environment and removing access from suspected compromised administrator accounts

  • Adding firewall restrictions to limit access to administrative systems

  • Engaging independent cybersecurity specialists to conduct a forensic investigation

  • Commencing a formal incident response process, including contact with its Data Protection Officer

  • Submitting an initial notification to the Data Protection Commission

The Department has stated that the incident is not connected to recently identified vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language that affected websites in Ireland and elsewhere.

What Was Exposed

Preliminary findings indicate that the compromised data is limited to basic account information.

Believed unaffected

The investigation is at an early stage. The Department has not disclosed how many individuals may be affected.

A verified list linking names to employer or agent roles is valuable to attackers — it identifies who holds access to what. That is the practical risk, even where the data itself is unremarkable.

Processing Continues, Decisions Are Issuing

The outage has not stopped the Department's work.

Permit applications continue to be processed internally, and applicants will still receive updates when decisions are reached. Draft applications, applications awaiting fee payment and other saved information will remain accessible when the portal returns — including applications that may exceed the normal 28-day submission window during the outage.

The Department has committed to appropriate flexibility for applications that exceed standard timeframes because of the outage. The same flexibility will apply to renewal applications and Labour Market Needs Test advertising requirements.

The Phishing Warning

The Department has issued a specific alert about communications that reference the incident.

Users are advised to:

  • Be alert to unexpected emails, calls or texts about employment permits or portal accounts

  • Avoid clicking suspicious links or opening unexpected attachments

  • Verify requests using established official contact details

  • Never disclose passwords or personal data in response to unsolicited requests

  • Treat requests for identity documents, business information or financial details with suspicion

The Department has stated it will never ask users to disclose personal data by email or text message.

What Employers Should Do

Brief your teams. Anyone with a portal account or a pending application should know what the Department will and will not ask for.

Diarise renewals. Any permit approaching expiry during the outage should be tracked. The flexibility commitment helps, but documentation of the original timeline still matters.

Keep local copies. If a submission was in progress when the portal went down, retain a separate record of the supporting documents.

Respond promptly to correspondence. Decisions are still being issued, and requests for further information should be answered within the stated timeframe.

Direct data concerns to the right address. Queries about the incident should go to dataqueries.permits@enterprise.gov.ie.

The Alternative Route

The Department has confirmed it is developing an alternative method for submitting new applications. Details are not yet available.

Until that channel is operational, new applications cannot be filed through the normal route — a significant constraint for employers with hiring timelines attached to permit approvals.
