Indonesia Plans to Raise Visa on Arrival Fees, Introduces Tiered Pricing for e-VOA

JAKARTA, August 12, 2026 — The Directorate General of Immigration in Indonesia has proposed increasing the Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee from 500,000 rupiah ($28) to up to 1 million rupiah ($56), with varying charges based on whether travelers apply online prior to departure or upon arrival.
The proposal was presented on August 12, 2026, by Hendarsam Marantoko, Director General of Immigration, during a press briefing at the Directorate General of Immigration headquarters in Jakarta.

Proposed Fee Structure
Under the plan outlined by the Director General of Immigration, Visa on Arrival fees would vary depending on how travelers apply:

Currently, both options cost 500,000 rupiah for an initial 30-day stay. The VOA can be extended once, allowing a total stay of up to 60 days.

Why the Change?
Immigration officials have cited two main reasons for the proposed pricing difference:
1. Financial and Exchange Rate Considerations
Hendarsam Marantoko said the current 500,000-rupiah fee needs to be reassessed, notably in light of fluctuations in the rupiah's exchange rate.

2. Managing Airport Congestion
By keeping the advance e-VOA fee lower, authorities hope to encourage more travelers to complete the process before departure, reducing lines at visa counters, particularly at Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
"If we consider them non-compliant, meaning they haven't filled out the application by the time they arrive, they are charged IDR 1 million, which is slightly more expensive. Record-Breaking Visa Issuance
Figures released during the briefing highlight the growing importance of the Visa on Arrival program within Indonesia's immigration system.

The electronic Visa on Arrival is by far one of the most widely used entry documents among foreign visitors to Indonesia.
Revenue Impact
As of August 10, 2026, the Directorate General reported 6.54 trillion rupiah in non-tax state revenue (PNBP) since the beginning of the year, representing 76.81% of its annual target.

No Effective Date Announced
Despite the announcement by the Director General of Immigration, no effective date for the new fees has been announced.
As of today, official information from the Directorate General of Immigration continues to list the fee for a 30-day Visa on Arrival at 500,000 rupiah. The proposed increases should therefore be considered an announced change that is still being prepared, pending formal regulatory approval and confirmation of an effective date.
Strategic Context
The planned increase comes as Indonesia continues to promote tourism while seeking to streamline immigration procedures for international visitors. The government has increasingly encouraged travelers to use its online e-VOA system to reduce processing times at airports.
The Directorate General of Immigration also aims to maintain and improve Soekarno-Hatta International Airport's ranking as 10th best airport immigration service worldwide in the Skytrax World Airport Awards.
