India tightens visa stay rules: foreigners must register before 180 days to extend stay. No more 14-day grace period. Major FRRO policy change effective 2026.

New Delhi, June 2, 2026 — The Indian government has introduced stricter immigration rules for foreigners on short-term visas, requiring them to register before completing 180 days if they wish to extend their stay in the country.

The updated Immigration and Foreigners Rules, 2025, notified by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday, mark a significant shift from the previous system and aim to improve monitoring and compliance.

Key Changes in the New Rules

  • Pre-Expiry Registration Required: Foreigners holding a visa valid for 180 days or less must now register any time before the expiry of the 180-day period if they intend to stay longer. Previously, registration was allowed up to 14 days after the 180-day period expired.

  • Same Rule for Longer Visas with Stay Limits: Foreigners on visas longer than 180 days but with a condition that each stay cannot exceed 180 days must also register before the 180-day limit.

  • Restricted Extensions: Such extensions will now be granted only in emergent circumstances.

  • Relief for Children of Mixed Citizenship: Parents no longer need to report the birth of a child if one parent is an Indian citizen and wishes to retain Indian citizenship for the child. However, if the child later acquires foreign citizenship while in India, parents must intimate the registration officer within 30 days.

  • Updated Reporting for Medical Institutions: Hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical facilities must follow revised administrative and reporting procedures for foreign patients.

Why India Is Tightening These Rules

The changes are part of the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen immigration oversight, improve data accuracy, and prevent overstays. With India seeing rising numbers of foreign visitors, students, and professionals, authorities want earlier visibility into extension requests to better manage stays and security.

Practical Impact on Foreigners

  • Travelers and Professionals: Must plan extensions well in advance and submit registration requests proactively.

  • Families: Clearer rules for children with Indian citizenship through one parent.

  • Medical Facilities: Updated compliance requirements when hosting foreign patients.

Foreigners are strongly advised to monitor their visa expiry dates closely and use the official portals (such as the Foreigners Regional Registration Office or FRRO portal) for timely registration.

What Foreigners Should Do Now

  1. Check your current visa conditions and remaining stay period.

  2. Submit registration or extension requests before reaching the 180-day mark.

  3. Keep all travel and visa documents updated.

  4. For complicated situations, seek guidance from immigration specialists or legal professionals.

This policy change reflects India’s balanced approach — remaining open to genuine visitors and talent while enforcing stricter compliance to prevent misuse of visas.
