NEW DELHI — July 11, 2026 — Germany has introduced the Digital Master Assessment Test (dMAT) as a mandatory new requirement for Indian graduates applying for Master's programmes through the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) verification process.
The standardized academic aptitude test will be gradually introduced as an extra component of APS documentation for certain applicant groups, enabling the new process to be implemented "in a structured manner." This requirement will be applicable to applications starting from the summer semester 2027 onwards, unless transitional exemptions are in place.

What is the dMAT?
The dMAT is a standardised academic aptitude test developed by German universities in collaboration with the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development (g.a.s.t.).
Key Features:
Digital Format: Conducted at designated test centres across India
Two Modules: Core Module (general academic aptitude) + Subject Module (subject-specific knowledge)
Language: All questions in English
Format: Single-choice questions
Duration: 3.5 hours including a break
Scoring: Percentile rank + dMAT score (0-200 scale)
"The dMAT does not replace APS document verification or the formal recognition of university degrees and higher education entrance requirements. It is an additional element in the APS documentation."— Science Section, German Embassy New Delhi
Who Must Take the dMAT?
The dMAT requirement applies to applicants whose previous degree falls within specific fields:
Affected Fields:
Current Subject Modules Available:
Chemistry
Physics
Computer Science
Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Data Science
Currently Using dMAT:
RWTH Aachen University — MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering
Georg-August University Göttingen — MSc Data Science
Who Is Exempt?
Category | Exemption |
Applicants to Bachelor's programmes | No dMAT required |
PhD applicants | No dMAT required |
Degree outside affected fields | No dMAT required |
Exchange/double-degree programmes | No dMAT required |
APS online registration completed before June 29, 2026 | Grandfathered — no dMAT required |
Complete APS documents submitted before June 29, 2026 | Exempt regardless of certificate issue date |
Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants | Unaffected |
"Applicants who have already received an APS certificate are also not required to take the dMAT for that completed application."
Important: dMAT Does NOT Replace APS
The German Embassy has clarified that the dMAT does not replace APS document verification.
"APS India will persist in verifying the authenticity and formal plausibility of academic documents following the current APS procedure. The dMAT serves as an additional component in the APS documentation."— Science Section, German Embassy New Delhi
What This Means:
APS document verification remains mandatory for all applicants
The dMAT certificate is submitted alongside existing degree certificates and transcripts
The dMAT result is referenced on the final APS certificate
Skipping either requirement leaves your application incomplete
"The dMAT score does not decide whether your APS documentation is complete. What matters is that the APS certificate is submitted, not the number on it."— APS India
Test Structure and Scoring
Core Module (90 minutes)
Measures general study aptitude
Three subtests assessing cognitive skills
Subject Module (90 minutes)
Evaluates subject-specific knowledge
Tests ability to apply knowledge at Master's level
Scoring:
Percentile Rank: Shows what percentage of participants received a lower or equal score
dMAT Score: 0-200 scale conversion of total correct answers
Universities decide independently how to use scores during admissions
Application Timeline
Date | Milestone |
June 29, 2026 | dMAT announced; registration opens |
September 15, 2026 | Registration closes |

Industry Response: Balancing Quality with Talent Attraction
The introduction of the dMAT has prompted discussion within Germany's higher education sector about how the new requirement will interact with universities' admissions processes.
"The dMAT is an important development, but it also raises a broader policy question. Under German higher education regulations, admission decisions are the responsibility of universities. By making the dMAT part of the APS process, it effectively becomes an additional entry requirement."— Akos Kiraly, Deputy Director at SRH Higher Education
"We support measures that enhance transparency and quality. At the same time, Germany faces a significant shortage of skilled professionals, and attracting talented international graduates – particularly from India – is a strategic priority for both higher education and the economy. Any extra requirement should enhance, not restrict, the freedom of universities to choose qualified students according to their own academic standards."— Akos Kiraly, Deputy Director at SRH Higher Education
Why Germany Introduced the dMAT
1. Standardising Diverse Grading Systems
The format was developed by the Universities of Ulm and Kassel, with the original groundwork supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The underlying goal is to give APS India and German universities a comparable, language-independent aptitude signal across India's wide range of grading systems and institutions.
2. Rising Application Volumes
The number of foreign applications to Germany is rising quickly, particularly from India.
3. Strategic Importance of Indian Students
India is now Germany's leading source of international students, with approximately 60,000 Indian students currently studying there. Germany currently accommodates more than 400,000 international students in total.
Practical Advice for Indian Applicants
If You Are Planning to Apply:
Check your degree field — Determine if your undergraduate degree falls within engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business, or management
Register for dMAT — Registration is open until September 15, 2026
Submit APS documents — You can submit APS documents first and provide the dMAT certificate later; you don't need to wait for your dMAT result before starting the rest of your APS paperwork
Prepare for the test — Sample tasks and preparation materials are available on the official dMAT website
Check exemptions — If you completed APS registration or submitted documents before June 29, 2026, you are exempt
Important Notes:
The dMAT certificate is valid indefinitely
The test is conducted at licensed centres across India, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune and other cities
The exam fee is Rs. 16,300 (approx. €150) , separate from the APS India fee
