Germany Updates China Travel Advisory: Visa-Free Entry Confirmed to End of 2026, Exit Ban Warnings Added

BERLIN, September 30, 2026 — Germany's Federal Foreign Office updated its China travel and security advisory on 29 September, reiterating that German ordinary-passport holders may enter China visa-free for stays of up to 30 days until 31 December 2026, while adding warnings that foreigners involved in civil or criminal proceedings may be barred from leaving the country.

Visa-Free Policy: Confirmed Through Year-End

China has extended its unilateral visa-waiver arrangement for Germany and 48 other countries until 31 December 2026, 24:00. German ordinary passport holders travelling for business, tourism, family visits, exchange programmes, or transit may enter without a visa for stays not exceeding 30 days.

Sweden was added to the scheme effective 10 November 2025, also valid until 31 December 2026. Russia's arrangement has been extended to 31 December 2027.

Travellers who do not meet the visa-free conditions must still obtain a visa before entering China.

Private Accommodation: 24-Hour Registration Still Required

The updated advisory emphasises that foreigners staying in accommodation other than hotels — such as private residences or homestays — must still complete local police registration within 24 hours of arrival.

According to Article 39 of China's Exit and Entry Administration Law, hotels must register foreign guests and report them to public security authorities. In cases of non-hotel accommodation, the foreign guest or their host is required to register with the local public security bureau within 24 hours.

Registering online has the same legal significance as registering in person. Not registering could lead to a warning and fine for the foreigner or their host.

Exit Ban Warnings Added

The German advisory now includes specific warnings about exit bans. Under the new Exit and Entry Regulations that took effect on 15 September 2026, foreigners involved in civil or criminal proceedings may be prohibited from leaving China.

A significant expansion concerns export control and technology import/export violations. Chinese citizens who breach export control regulations may be deemed to endanger national industrial or technological security and barred from leaving the country. The duration of such restrictions is not specified in the regulations.

For foreign travellers, providing false information in a visa application or making misleading statements at the border may trigger entry bans of one to five years.
