France scraps Airport Transit Visa (ATV) for Indian nationals – visa-free transit at Paris CDG from April 10, 2026.

PARIS / NEW DELHI – In a significant move to bolster the "Special Global Strategic Partnership" between France and India, French authorities have officially abolished the Airport Transit Visa (ATV) requirement for Indian nationals.

The policy change, which came into effect on April 10, 2026, simplifies long-haul travel for Indian passport holders using French airports—such as Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)—as a hub for travel to North America, South America, and other non-Schengen destinations.

The Road to Visa-Free Transit

The decision follows a high-profile state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron to India in February 2026. During meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Macron pledged to introduce measures to "ease the travel of Indian nationals via France," recognizing the growing volume of Indian students, professionals, and tourists.

Legislative Timeline:

  • February 2026: President Macron announces travel easing measures during his India visit.

  • April 9, 2026: A decree amending the regulations of May 10, 2010, is published in the French Official Gazette (Journal Officiel).

  • April 10, 2026: The waiver officially becomes operational.

  • April 23, 2026: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the French Embassy in India formally announce the full operationalization of the measure.

Key Requirements and Limitations

While the ATV requirement has been lifted, travelers must still adhere to specific conditions to qualify for visa-free transit:

  1. Ordinary Passports: The waiver applies to Indian nationals holding standard, ordinary passports.

  2. International Zone Only: Passengers must remain within the international transit zone of the airport.

  3. No Immigration Entry: Travelers are not permitted to pass through border control or enter the Schengen Area (French territory) without a standard Schengen Visa.

  4. En Route to Third Countries: The measure is designed for passengers connecting to a destination outside the Schengen zone.

Impact on International Travel

This reform is expected to make France a more competitive transit hub for Indians traveling westward. By removing the ATV, travelers save on visa fees (approx. €80) and avoid the administrative burden of visiting VFS Global centers for biometric collection just for a layover.

Strategic Hubs Benefiting from the Move:

  • Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG): One of the world's busiest airports and a primary gateway for Air France and its partners.

  • Paris Orly (ORY): A secondary hub for European and transatlantic connections.

Official Guidance

The France-Visas platform has already been updated to reflect these changes. Indian travelers are no longer able to submit applications for ATVs, and those with existing layovers can now proceed with just their valid passport and onward flight tickets.

Note: This waiver applies specifically to mainland France. Travelers are encouraged to check specific requirements if transiting through French Overseas Territories.
