TOKYO/BEIJING, September 13, 2026 — China will raise visa fees for Japanese citizens by more than sevenfold starting September 14, 2026, in a reciprocal move following Japan's decision to increase visa fees for foreign nationals earlier this year.
The Chinese Embassy in Tokyo announced the adjustment on September 11, 2026, stating that the change is based on a "reciprocal visa fee arrangement." Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed at a regular press briefing that the adjustment was made "in accordance with the principle of reciprocity".
