Canada's online passport renewal service is now available to all eligible adult Canadians with no daily application cap, effective July 28, 2026.

In a significant move to modernize federal services, the Government of Canada has officially removed all limits on online passport renewal applications, making the digital service available to every eligible adult Canadian in Canada.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab made the announcement on July 28, 2026, in Vancouver, declaring that Canadians will no longer have to wait for an online application spot to become available. Previously, the system capped online renewals at 2,000 applications per day — a limit that has now been eliminated entirely.

Canadians anticipate passport services that accommodate their needs. Broadening online renewal provides eligible Canadians with an easier and more convenient method to renew their passports, free from unnecessary obstacles or delays. The Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship

What Has Changed?

Before this expansion, Canadians could only renew their passports online if their passport was set to expire within six months or had already expired. Now, while the online option remains limited to those same expiry conditions, the daily application cap has been removed — meaning eligible Canadians can apply whenever it suits them.

The online renewal service was first launched as a pilot program on December 15, 2024, with limited availability. After months of testing and gradual expansion, the system is now considered robust enough to handle unlimited daily applications.

“This allows us to closely monitor performance and quickly address any issues."As testing progresses and capacity grows, additional daily applications will be incorporated."IRCC Representative

Who Is Eligible?

To renew a passport online, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be applying to renew their own adult passport

  • Have a home and mailing address in Canada (must receive the passport there)

  • Have applied for their current passport when they were 16 or older

  • Hold a regular blue passport (valid for 5 or 10 years) issued within the last 15 years

  • Their passport has expired or will expire within the next six months

  • Do not need a passport within the next 20 business days (plus mailing time)

  • Utilize the identical name, date of birth, place of birth, and gender identifier

  • Current passport is not damaged, seized, or surrendered

  • Have a digital passport photo from a commercial photographer

  • No observations or notes on the passport (e.g., name too long to print, diplomatic passport)

  • Are not reporting a lost or stolen passport

Important: Canadians can only apply online from within Canada. Online applications remain limited to passports expiring within six months — the eligibility expansion does not change this requirement.

How the Online Process Works

Canadians can complete their passport renewal application entirely online by:

  1. Submitting the application digitally

  2. Uploading a digital passport photo from a commercial photographer

  3. Making payment electronically

Applicants can also digitally upload supporting documentation instead of mailing original copies.

The online renewal service follows the 20-business-day service standard — the same as simplified adult renewals submitted through most Service Canada Centres or by mail. Canadians needing faster turnaround must apply in person at select Service Canada Centres offering 10-business-day, express, or urgent service options.

Recent Improvements to Passport Services

This expansion builds on several recent enhancements to Canada’s passport program:

Improvement

Details

Online application status checker

Track your application in real time

10-business-day in-person service

Expanded access at select Service Canada Centres

Passport service guarantee

Applications processed within 30 business days or the passport is free

Daily cap removed

Unlimited online applications starting July 28, 2026

The changes come after passport offices were overwhelmed with applications when pandemic-related travel restrictions eased, creating a backlog that hobbled the system.

What About Fees?

Immigration Minister Diab confirmed that passport application fees have not been adjusted since 2013 and the government does not anticipate an increase soon.

"It's essential for us to align with the government's expenses in providing services to Canadians... we don't expect a rise at this moment due to the announcement."Minister Lena Diab

What’s Next? Future Expansions

Minister Diab did not rule out the possibility of further expanding online eligibility to:

  • Children under 16

  • Canadians applying from abroad

We will keep an eye on the progress … as we work on enhancements, possibly including children or expanding to populations beyond Canada."Minister Lena Diab

In-Person and Mail Services Remain Available

Canadians who prefer or require traditional methods can still renew their passports in person at Service Canada Centres or by mail.

“Accessible service means giving Canadians options. We are breaking down the obstacles that separate Canadians from the services they depend on by updating our delivery methods."The Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families

Warning: Beware of Scam Websites

The federal government has warned Canadians about private websites that falsely present themselves as official passport services. The Competition Bureau recently announced charges against two Ontario residents who operated sites called Passport Online and Passport Express, misleading customers into believing they were dealing directly with the federal government.

Canadians should only use the official Government of Canada portal for online passport renewals.
