Vienna, May 14, 2026 — Austria’s Public Employment Service (AMS) has tightened its requirements for verifying professional experience in new residence permit applications. Applicants must now submit not only standard employer-issued work certificates but also official social security or health insurance records from their home country or the country where the experience was gained.

The additional documents, known as Versicherungsdatenauszüge, serve as independent confirmation of actual employment periods and are increasingly requested in practice by labor authorities.

Austria introduces stricter verification of professional experience – social security records now required.

What Has Changed?

  • New Requirement: Official records issued by state social insurance institutions, health insurance funds, or equivalent government authorities in the country of previous employment.

  • Purpose: To provide more reliable, third-party verification of professional experience beyond employer references, which can sometimes be subjective or incomplete.

  • Scope: This applies primarily to new residence permit applications (e.g., Red-White-Red Card, EU Blue Card, or other skilled worker permits).

  • Exemptions: Applications for extensions of existing permits are generally not affected. Once an individual is insured in Austria, authorities can rely on domestic social insurance data.

Practical Implications

Because social insurance records vary widely in format, availability, and processing times across different countries, this change is expected to add several weeks — or even months — to document preparation for many applicants.

Countries with complex or slow bureaucratic systems may pose particular challenges. Applicants from nations where such records are not easily accessible are advised to start the process early.

Recommendations for Applicants and Employers

  • Begin collecting foreign social insurance or health insurance records well in advance.

  • Contact the relevant authorities in the country where previous work experience was gained as soon as possible.

  • Prepare certified translations and apostilles where required.

  • Consult with immigration specialists or employers’ legal teams to ensure all supporting documents meet AMS expectations.

This development reflects Austria’s ongoing efforts to maintain the integrity and quality of its skilled migration programs while ensuring that only applicants with genuine professional qualifications receive residence permits.

The AMS has not yet issued a formal public circular on the change, but the requirement is already being applied consistently in ongoing cases.

Austria’s stricter verification requirements for professional experience in residence permit applications reflect a broader focus on regulatory compliance, workforce qualification standards, and transparent immigration processes. Such policy measures can influence international mobility, talent acquisition, and administrative procedures for both employers and applicants. These regulatory and institutional leadership concepts are also explored in the strategic governance seminar & course for executives in Vienna, Austria, where professionals examine policy implementation, governance frameworks, and strategic decision-making in complex regulatory environments.
