Trump Administration Launches AI-Powered Government Portal: America.gov
Updated: 3 hours ago
WASHINGTON, October 4, 2026 — The Trump administration has officially launched America.gov, an AI-powered digital platform designed to serve as a single entry point for Americans to access federal government information and services online. President Donald Trump unveiled the site on September 28, 2026, signing an executive order directing all federal agencies to integrate their public-facing services with the platform.
The initiative aims to replace the fragmented experience of navigating more than 29,000 federal websites with a unified, conversational interface that answers questions in plain language and provides official, sourced information.

What America.gov Does Today
The current version of America.gov functions primarily as an AI-powered search and information tool. Users can type questions in natural language and receive step-by-step guidance sourced exclusively from official government websites.
Key features available now:
Conversational Q&A — Pose inquiries such as “How do I renew my passport?” or “How do I register a business?” and get customized responses
Source verification — Every answer includes links to the original government sources for transparency
No account required — Users can ask questions without creating an account or sharing personal information
Multi-language support — Available in English, Spanish, and French
Document upload — Users can upload government forms or letters (PDFs) for interpretation, with personal information automatically removed
Voice input — Microphone functionality allows spoken questions
The platform is operated by the General Services Administration (GSA) and was designed by the White House’s National Design Studio, led by Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, who joined the administration as Chief Design Officer.
What’s Coming in 2027
The administration has outlined an ambitious Phase Two rollout for early 2027, which will transform America.gov from an information tool into a transactional platform.
Planned capabilities include:
Service | Description |
Passport renewal | Apply, upload photos, and track progress entirely within the platform (launching December 2026) |
Medicare enrollment | Complete enrollment and find in-network doctors |
Federal job applications | Upload resumes and receive matched job recommendations |
Name changes | Update legal name across multiple agencies simultaneously |
Medication comparison | Compare drug costs and locate nearby pharmacies |
Campground reservations | Find and book federal campgrounds |
Housing search | Locate federally supported housing developments |
Secretary of State Marco Rubio demonstrated a simulation showing a user applying for a passport through America.gov, with the ability to submit personal information, upload a photo, and track approval and shipment. By the end of 2027, Rubio said the goal is for the vast majority of Americans to be able to apply for passports through the platform.
The Executive Order
Trump signed an Executive Order on Streamlining Access to Government Services Through America.gov on September 28, directing federal agencies to integrate their services with the platform.
Key provisions of the order:
Covered services are defined as public-facing federal services serving more than 100,000 users in a 12-month period that can be accessed online
Exemptions include IRS tax filing services and national-security-sensitive services from the Department of War and Intelligence Community
Agencies must identify covered services, integrate them with America.gov in a privacy-preserving manner, and complete integration with Login.gov for authentication
OMB must issue implementation guidance within 90 days
Existing access methods — in-person, phone, mail, and agency-specific digital services — must remain available
The order emphasizes that America.gov should not become a centralized federal system of records, with each agency preserving custody and control of its own records and systems.
Privacy and Data Protection
The administration has stressed privacy protections built into the platform:
No personal information collected or stored during question-and-answer sessions
Conversations disappear when users leave the site
No web-tracking technologies used
No ads — accuracy is never influenced by third parties
Document uploads have personal information automatically removed
However, the platform’s FAQ notes that AI can make mistakes and advises users to verify sources included with each answer before making important decisions.
An Unscripted Moment at Launch
In an unexpected development, America.gov’s AI chatbot initially provided answers that directly contradicted some of President Trump’s past public statements — despite sourcing only from official government information.
When asked about the 2020 presidential election, the site responded: “Official federal sources do not show that widespread fraud changed the 2020 presidential election outcome.” It also confirmed the Pentagon is the headquarters of the Department of Defense, despite Trump’s executive order to rebrand it as the Department of War.
After these responses drew media attention, the site began modifying its answers. When asked again about the 2020 election, it replied that it could not answer “political questions” — a response it also gave for inquiries about impeachment or felony convictions.
Requests for comment were not answered by either the GSA or OMB. The White House mentioned that America.gov “will continue to be updated with additional features, resources, and information from the federal government.”
