Hungary’s Foreign Minister Announces Landmark Aviation Deal to Strengthen India Ties

Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, revealed on Tuesday that Wizz Air will launch daily non-stop flights between Budapest and Mumbai this year, marking a historic milestone in bilateral relations. The move aims to eliminate travel barriers and turbocharge economic, educational, and tourism exchanges between the two nations.

Budapest-Mumbai Direct Flights: Key Details

The new Wizz Air Budapest-Mumbai route will operate seven days a week, providing seamless connectivity to India’s financial hub. Szijjártó emphasized that direct flights address a longstanding obstacle in bilateral cooperation, stating:

"India, the planet’s most populous nation and one of the fastest-expanding economies, will become reachable from Hungary via direct flights within months."

The minister also confirmed talks to expand air links further, with plans for a Budapest-New Delhi direct flight. This would require updating the Hungary-India aviation agreement, with negotiations already underway.

Economic and Tourism Benefits of Non-Stop Flights

Strengthening Business and Diplomatic Ties

Direct flights are expected to accelerate partnerships in:

  • Trade: Bilateral trade is set to hit a record $1.5 billion in 2025, driven by Hungarian firms like energy drink giant Hell (India is its second-largest market) and defense supplier BHE Bonn Hungary.

  • Investments: Indian companies are shifting from manufacturing to R&D in Hungary, creating high-skilled jobs in tech and engineering.

  • Tourism: Enhanced accessibility will boost visitor numbers to cultural landmarks like Budapest’s Parliament and India’s Taj Mahal.

Education and Innovation

The route will simplify travel for students and researchers, fostering collaboration in cutting-edge sectors like space technology and healthcare.

Why This Matters for Hungary and India

Szijjártó highlighted the shared “patriotic, national interest-driven policies” fueling cooperation. Key outcomes include:

  • Job Creation: Indian firms employ tens of thousands in Hungary.

  • Market Expansion: Hungarian healthcare and defense companies are gaining prominence in India.

  • Aviation Growth: Wizz Air’s expansion signals Hungary’s rising role as a Central European travel hub.

What’s Next?

With the Budapest-Mumbai direct flights launching this year, focus shifts to finalizing the Budapest-New Delhi route. Travelers can expect shorter travel times, competitive fares, and streamlined logistics for business and leisure.
