The Spain Digital Nomad Visa has become more challenging to obtain in 2025 due to an increase in the minimum income requirement. Following Spain’s recent minimum wage hike, the visa’s financial threshold has risen, impacting remote workers eyeing the country’s sunny shores and vibrant culture.
Updated Income Thresholds for the Spain Digital Nomad Visa
In January 2025, Spain raised its minimum wage (SMI) by 4.4%, setting it at €1,184 per month across 14 payments, or €16,576 annually. The Digital Nomad Visa now mandates a minimum monthly income of €2,762, which represents 200% of the SMI (Social Minimum Income). This updated requirement reflects an increase from the 2024 threshold of €2,646, aligning with revised income standards for eligibility. For couples, an additional 75% of the SMI (€888) is needed, while each dependent requires an extra 25% (€296).
Why the Change?
The minimum wage increase, finalized on January 29, 2025, by Spain’s Ministry of Labour and trade unions, aims to improve living standards amid rising costs. However, this adjustment directly raises the bar for visa applicants, ensuring they can support themselves in Spain’s economy.
What This Means for Applicants
Prospective digital nomads must now prove a higher income to qualify, which may exclude some remote workers. Those planning to apply should review their finances and ensure their income meets or exceeds the new €2,762 monthly threshold for individuals. Couples and families face even higher requirements, making careful financial planning essential.
Tips for a Successful Application
To navigate the updated requirements, applicants should provide clear proof of income, such as bank statements or employment contracts, covering at least the past three months. Consulting with a visa expert or immigration lawyer can also help streamline the process and avoid delays.
The Spain Digital Nomad Visa remains an attractive option for remote workers, offering access to a rich lifestyle and favorable tax benefits. However, with the new income thresholds, preparation is key to securing this opportunity in 2025.
