Saudi Arabia Lets Skilled Foreign Workers Sponsor Families Before Their Own Visa Is Finalised
Updated: 4 hours ago
RIYADH, October 7, 2026 — Saudi Arabia will now let highly skilled foreign workers start the process of bringing their families to the Kingdom before their own work visa is settled, according to an Interior Ministry announcement on Tuesday.
The change, developed with the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, is intended to shorten the separation period that typically accompanies a professional's relocation to Saudi Arabia.
The Core Change
Two visa processes that previously ran in sequence will now run side by side.
Under the previous system, a foreign professional had to complete their own employment visa and residence procedures before sponsoring dependents. That often meant entering the Kingdom alone and waiting months before family members could follow.
The new arrangement allows dependents' entry visas to be issued while the worker's own employment visa is still being processed, subject to the application meeting all requirements.
Who Can Be Sponsored
Three categories of dependents are covered:
Dependent | Condition |
Spouse | None specified |
Sons | Under 25 |
Daughters | Unmarried |
Family members who arrive under this route can complete their residence permit procedures after entry, in line with existing regulations.
Why This Matters
The measure addresses a practical problem in Gulf labour migration: family separation during the onboarding period. For doctors, engineers, and technology specialists weighing offers in the region, the length of separation is a real factor.
Saudi Arabia has been competing directly with the UAE and Qatar for senior talent. Reducing relocation friction is one lever it can pull without changing salary structures.
The announcement did not specify which professions qualify under the "highly skilled" category, what income threshold applies, or the processing timeline for dependents' visas. Those details are expected to emerge as the policy is implemented.
