COPENHAGEN, October 8, 2026 — Denmark has drawn a line under paper-based family immigration applications. From October 14, 2026, anyone applying to join a permanent residence holder in Denmark must file digitally — or expect the application to be turned away.

The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) launched the digital MF4 on September 14, 2026, as detailed in its official announcement. Since then, both formats have run in parallel. That dual-track period ends next week.

The Deadline That Matters

Two cut-off points fall on the same date.

Paper MF4 submissions will no longer be accepted. SIRI has said it will, as a general rule, reject printable applications lodged after October 14.

At the same time, the older MF1 and MF2 forms are being withdrawn for this category entirely. Anyone who previously used them must now file through the digital MF4 instead.

Who This Applies To

The form serves a specific group: foreign nationals seeking residence as accompanying family of someone who holds permanent residence in Denmark, granted on the basis of work or study.

The sponsor must satisfy one of two tests. They either continue to meet the conditions attached to the permit they held when permanent residence was granted, or they hold employment that would qualify them for a residence permit under a Danish work scheme.

The form covers two scenarios — a first-time application, and an extension of an existing accompanying family permit. It also applies where the sponsor has since acquired Danish citizenship on the same work or study basis.

What Changes in Practice

The digital format differs from its printable predecessor, with instructions presented both on the application page at newtodenmark.dk and within the form itself.

Applicants gain one notable addition: a login-based overview showing all active cases, plus submitted applications for up to 30 days after filing. For applicants accustomed to paper submissions with no visibility into processing, that represents a meaningful shift.

A Maintenance Window This Week

SIRI has also flagged a scheduled outage. All online application forms were unavailable from Wednesday, October 7 at 3:00 PM until Thursday, October 8 at 12:00 PM for technical maintenance. Online visa invitations were unaffected.

Anyone planning to file ahead of the October 14 deadline should factor the closure into their timeline.
