Brazil has officially reinstated visa requirements for travelers from Australia, Canada, and the United States, ending a six-year visa-free policy. The new rule, effective today, April 10, 2025, aligns with Brazil’s reciprocity principle, as these nations currently require visas from Brazilian citizens.
Why Did Brazil Reinstate Visa Requirements?
Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the country "does not offer unilateral visa exemptions." The decision follows ongoing negotiations to establish mutual visa-free travel agreements with these nations.
"We’re still in talks to have the United States lift its visa requirement for Brazilians, which would allow us to reciprocate," said Brazil’s Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino.
Despite the change, the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia confirmed that Americans can still apply for e-visas when visiting Brazil.
Who Is Affected?
In 2024, Brazil welcomed:
728,537 visitors from the United States
96,540 from Canada
52,888 from Australia
Now, travelers from these countries must obtain an e-visa before arrival, whether entering by air, land, or sea.
